Injury to the Penis Common and Painful

Most injuries to the penis are a result of an athletic event where the participant is not wearing gear to protect the groin region. However, there is any number of ways that an injury of this type can happen. Because the penis has a dual function which includes sexual reproduction, it is incredibly sensitive and very prone to injury. Even something like sexual intercourse can cause damage to the penis and is the second most common occurrence of this type of injury.

Injuries to the penis during sexual intercourse are often caused when the penis slips out of the vagina and strikes against the pelvis. This can drastically damage the muscles of the penis in the form of a severe tear. This is most often caused by the penis bending too sharply. When an injury happens to this area it is important to be examined by a medical professional. Damage that occurs could have long lasting or permanent results that might not be discovered immediately.

The pain of a groin injury can be excruciating. Many injuries will heal on their own and may not need medical treatment but it is important to monitor the injury to be on the lookout for inflammation. If the injury is extensive, it may require minor to major surgery. Most surgeries are simple and are outpatient.

To play it safe, If you have injured your penis in the past year, it may be a good idea to have the doctor examine your penis during your annual physical exam. As the other function of the penis is integral to urination it is important to be cautious of trauma occurring to this area.
